 Stephen Hunt

Director
District 3

Stephen Hunt was elected as Director of USW District 3 (Western and Northern Canada) on October 27, 2005, after being appointed in April 2004, to replace Ken Neumann, who became the Steelworkers' National Director for Canada.

Steve has been involved in provincial and territorial activities for more than three decades. A proud miner and union member all his working life, Steve started as a member in 1973, and was appointed a staff representative in 1984.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Steve worked tirelessly to represent Steelworkers in the BC Interior. In 1995 he added the responsibility of being the District 3 education and health, safety and environment coordinator to his duties.

A passionate advocate for worker health and safety, Steve is the only worker representative on the British Columbia Workers Compensation Board's Board of Directors. He has also served on numerous national and international bodies examining and advancing workplace safety and health.

Steve has worked hard to ensure the success of the IWA (Industrial, Wood and Allied Workers of Canada) merger, including leading a major campaign to stop the horrific level of death and serious injury in the BC forest sector. The IWA merger, along with an aggressive District 3 organizing program, has seen Steelworkers' membership in the union's largest geographic district grow to over 55,000 members.
