Wayne Fraser
Director District 6 |
Wayne Fraser was elected Director of District 6 by a 69% plurality in November 2001 and took office in March 2002. He was re-elected by acclamation in November 2005.
Wayne was hired at Inco's Sudbury plant in 1969 as a labourer, but within three months got an apprenticeship as a motor winder. Within one year he had been elected shop steward.
Elected to Local 6500's executive board in 1976, Wayne was a member of the bargaining committee, and served as a leader in an eight and-a-half month strike against Inco in 1978. He served as one of the first instructors in the Union's back-to-the-locals education program where union members train other union members in tool subjects.
Fraser was appointed to the Steelworkers’ staff in 1986, was promoted to Area Coordinator for Northeastern Ontario in 1991, and has been involved in collective bargaining and organizing new members. He has negotiated agreements with more than 40 employers in areas including mining, auto parts, energy, community and social services and manufacturing.
Fraser implemented the first District 6 Strike Benefit Fund to provide striking members with benefit coverage. Fraser has worked to build assertive bargaining policies to guide locals and staff. A focus of his directorship is to strive for the development of leaders and staff that are increasingly reflective of the diversity of the union's membership.
He serves on the boards of the Steelworkers Humanity Fund, the Steelworkers Trusteed Benefit Plan, the Mining Industry Training and Adjustment Council and the Canadian Steel Trade and Employment Congress.
